Answers to Two Questions About Scholarships
Learn the answer to questions about "when do we get the money?"
Students and parents frequently have questions about the process of applying or obtaining scholarships. Previous posts shared techniques and methods that answer many of the questions. This post will answer two questions specifically about when scholarship recipients will generally receive the money awarded to them.
How Long Will It Take to Hear Whether I Won or Not?
Each scholarship will have different schedules for notifying recipients. Typically, however, scholarship committees will require four to six month from application deadlines to notification for the winners. Also, typically, scholarship committees do not notify applicants that they did not win the scholarship.
Many people, especially seniors in high school, begin applying for scholarships toward the end of the school year, or even the beginning of summer. They hope to use the scholarship money for their first semester in college—the fall semester. Waiting that late will usually prevent you from receiving notification whether you won or not, let alone receiving the money in time to pay tuition.
That is why I recommend that people start applying for scholarships at age 13 or 14.
When Will I Receive the Actual Money?
Once again, each scholarship committee awards the money at different times. Typically, committees will send the money when you send them proof of enrollment in approved universities. Some committees, usually restricted scholarships, transfer the money directly to the university. A few of the committees, usually unrestricted scholarships, will send the money directing to the recipient.
The scholarship committees will send detailed information to the recipient about how to apply for the money.
